Effectively connecting teachers with experts- Why and how?

Effectively connecting teachers with experts- Why and how?
Education and teachers complement each other. The more a teacher spreads her wings of knowledge, the higher she flies in the world of education. It is important to carry on with the learning process throughout your life to discover new possibilities. There is a hidden lesson in everything that we read, in all that a teacher teaches, those words of wisdom spoken by our elders all the time and not to forget a lesson is learnt when a student questions us and we are unable to answer it.

Need of an Expert- Teacher Connection
A true teacher is always a learner. Even a teacher has limits to her knowledge bank. What if someday a student comes up with a question which is out of her knowledge bank? Will she be able to answer it? May be yes, but she might not be accurate with her answer. In that case what should a teacher do? Effective and regular connection of teachers with experts is the possible way. Students are curious to know about new things and events happening around them. This is a positive sign for a growing mind. They are eager to ask their teacher about everything. For them a teacher has answers to all their queries. But in reality even a teacher can lack information which can be embarrassing for some to accept. However, the teacher can always get back with the answer. The solution to this is to establish an effective connection with experts. Experts, a person who excels in his field, can be asked to guide with the particular query. The teacher in return can convey the correct answer but in a simpler way to her students.
In 21st century technology has to be taken hand in hand while focusing on teaching methods to be applied in schools. Students are surrounded by technology packed stuff all around them; therefore it is necessary to have them in school too as their mode of learning. This video highlights the use of technology in the schools and how it can be beneficial to all.
https://youtu.be/HbVKPhVCRFI

Ways to do it
An effective and quickest way to connect with the experts is internet. All schools and educational institutes are Wi-Fi enabled in today’s time. The teacher could use internet to connect to other school networks from where she can get the answers to the query sought. Another method would be getting connected through social networking sites like LinkedIn. The teachers can maintain contacts with the experts through it and hence can seek desired information. By using Google Hangouts one can also get connected to the desired experts. Google Hangouts is an instant messaging and video chat platform developed by Google. It allows conversation between two or more persons at the same time. It’s an online service accessible through Gmail or Google + websites. Photos can also be shared while using Hangouts. There is an option to perform video chat but the number of participants is limited to 10. But, there is no limitation to number of people who can watch the video chat. The teacher can have live chat sessions with the experts and the students get an opportunity to interact with them directly. Virtually, the entire class or school can listen to what an expert is saying. This will widen the scope of education.

 Who will benefit?
All involved in the teacher-expert connectivity are beneficiary to it.

Students: the queries of the students will be better resolved with the right kind of approach and exposure on the topic mentioned. They will develop more confidence in their teachers as the relation among student and teachers will improve with it. Also the students will learn to use technology for their betterment.

Teachers: no more embarrassment to be faced for lack of knowledge. The teachers too have an opportunity to expand their knowledge base. With the use of internet and advice from experts they will be able to enhance their teaching abilities and thus ultimately benefiting the students.

Experts: through direct connection with the teachers, they also get a chance to share their wisdom for the upbringing of the new generation. It could be a learning experience for them too.

School: in the whole process of teacher-expert connection, the school also becomes a beneficiary participant in it. Effective connection results in better teaching abilities which in turn lead to better information sharing with students and thus students get the correct answer to their queries. It also adds value to school’s reputation.

The benefits are widespread and one needs to use the social media platform creatively and carefully so that the negatives of internet usage should not hinder the process of learning. The students are exposed to social media but its best use would be to have a guided approach towards it.

TEACHING GRAVITY

TEACHING GRAVITY
Children have always wondered about why humans don’t fly, why a stone thrown upwards in the sky returns back to ground, why do we fall if we jump from a height, why does an aircraft require so much push to take off? What makes everything fall on the ground?
To the layman, a standard explanation of gravity is the reason why objects fall. Discovered by Isaac Newton, gravity in its basic principles can be defined as the relationship between any two objects in the universe based on their masses and relative distance. In other words, when the mass of the objects is high and the distance between them is less, the gravitational pull or the attraction between the two becomes stronger. E.g. the mass of the earth is high and the mass of the humans is also high, but since the earth has a greater mass (thus greater gravitational pull) we are attracted towards it, but to move away from the gravitational pull of the earth we would require a very strong force.
http://eschooltoday.com/science/forces/images/GRAVITATIONAL-FORCE.jpg
It is the gravity which positions our planets, moon, and sun and clumps the stars together into galaxies. Gravity plays a very important role in making the universe. We are not aware of the Sun’s gravitational pull because it is so distant from us, but it is the sun’s gravitation that positions the earth where it is. The gravitational force of the moon is known to cause tidal waves in the oceans. The concept of Gravity is complex and hence, it needs to be understood with experiments https://youtu.be/p_o4aY7xkXg
http://mail.colonial.net/~hkaiter/Aaa_web_images2012/gravity.gif
Experiments explaining Gravity:
Several experiments have been conducted on the topic of gravity which can be understood from the concern videos. They include
Earth’s Attraction
Through researches it has been observed that the earth has an invisible magnetic field which pulls us and other objects towards its center, this magnetic field is called gravity. When any object reaches beyond the magnetic pull of the earth, the gravity starts weakening and thus the object floats, however, the gravitational attraction does not end.
http://www.ultimate-survival-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/earth-magfield.jpg
Gravitational pull of two small objects in a spacecraft would be overpowered by other forces like the circulation of air available etc. In the space the shuttles orbit the gravitational pull of the earth. It has been discovered that the earth’s gravitational pull in a space shuttle will be 11% less than that on its surface.
Using a simple pendulum to measure Gravity
http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/Class/phy122ps/labs/dokuwiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=phy123summer:pendulum.jpg
When we swing a pendulum sideways from its resting position it faces force due to gravity which accelerates it back towards its resting position. When we swing it sideways and release it the force of our push combines with its mass (weight) and creates oscillation around the resting position in back and forth movements. The time it takes to swing left to right be called period (T) and it is dependent upon the length of the pendulum (L) (also called the radius of oscillation) and the force and width with which it was swung. The formula used is:
pendulum period

The Universal Gravitation: Sun, Earth, Moon and the Planets
Universe has around 100 billion galaxies, each galaxy has almost 100 billion stars, among which one is ‘The Sun’. The sun moves around our galaxy- ‘the Milky Way’. Our solar system consists of the Sun, the nine planets, the planetary moons, comets and asteroids. Both Sun and Earth move around a common center of gravity, but since the sun is huge and has more mass than earth its gravitational field extends to that of the earth and as a result the earth rotates around the sun. This is the reason why the sun always rises from the east, and the sun revolves in 12 constellations which we refer as zodiacs.

The earth and our moon are considered to be a binary system with the same source of gravitational pull. Though the gravitational pull of sun is greater than the earth, but since the moon is closer to the earth and earth’s gravitational impact is greater on the moon than that of the sun, the moon revolves around the earth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W47Wa7onrIQ
Micro Gravity- weightlessness
The feeling of weightlessness on performing various acts like jumping, while in elevator, being at the top of a giant wheel are all related to this principle. The weight of an individual is measured on a weighing scale where the weight of the body is on the scale and the scale exerts an equal force on the body and that is the calculated weight, but when an individual pushes against the gravitational force of the earth the weight is recorded as zero. This causes a feeling of floating while you are being pulled by the gravitational force. So, how much do you weigh depends upon your relative position and force against gravity. In space the individual weighs 11 kgs less than his/her earthly weight.
former USU GAS team member Rob Barnett

Throwing a ball into space
The gravitational pull of the earth is very strong, which requires the spacecrafts to exert pressure opposite to the gravitational field to enter space. The below diagram shows that if a ball is thrown at a 40,320 km/hr (24,436 mph) only then it will reach point L1 where the gravitational field of the Moon would work, causing the ball to come up at a greater speed unless it hits the land on the moon. This is practically impossible to do!

Let us recollect the ways in which gravity is affecting our life and analyze how important it is for the universal existence. What would happen if the gravitational field was suddenly suspended? Run your imagination on how the world would be then!!

Failures Are Better Than Short-lived Success

Failures Are Better Than Short-lived Success

Was greeted by a familiar news today in the morning. Yet another child committed suicide due to excessive pressure from school and parents. A really sad and bad way of starting the day. So what do we do about it? Simple, shut down the laptop and forget about it. Out of sight and out of mind. Perfect solution, right? Guess not. These suicides by little children have become a norm of the day and one day we too will have kids and if things don’t change by then, our kids too will face the same pressures and one day maybe they too will become a news item for others to just read click their throats and forget all about them.

Is this really the future that we want for our children? Is this what we really want for our, in fact, for all the children of the world? If no, then let’s come together and change what is wrong with the world where we are putting so much pressure for success on these poor little souls that they are breaking to the point of killing themselves. This change will have to start from within us.

Most kids who are saved after their suicide attempts and asked about the reasons that pushed them towards taking this ghastly step stated that, they did it because they were basically trying to escape a situation which they felt they just could not deal with. So, what were those situations? A survey shows that there are many factors like broken homes, abusive parents and other similar problems but the most common problem which maximum number of students faced was that of the pressure to succeed where failure as an option was just not provided to them.

Image result for parental pressure on students images

Let’s look at some of the big changes that we need to bring about in the education system which will help in fighting these depressive cases.

Teach The Meaning Of failure At Schools

This is apparently the biggest problem. Schools do not teach the true meaning of failure and as a result of this ignorance, any sort of failure of the child, no matter how small and inconsequential, drive the students right into the arms of depression. It is important that the kids are told that being imperfect is just fine. Failure, in fact, is a stepping stone to success. The school will have to play a very important role in making the kids understand that it is not a crime, as most of them find, to fail. But, are the schools of today really working towards this end? Are they providing the necessary guidance and support to their students to cope up with the increased pressure that these kids are feeling? I don’t think so. In, fact, what I find is that the schools are playing a major role in increasing the pressure to succeed on these poor kids.

Academics, Sports, Creative Classes, Debates, Cultural Fests: Where Do We Stop Demanding From The Kids

It has become important that the kid needs to excel not just in academics but also in sports and many other extra curricular activities. The kids are expected to attend school, then go to some after school sports camps, then attend some dance classes or drawing classes or creative writing classes, the hopes and expectations from these kids just never end. Have we completely forgotten that these are little children and not performance machines? Do we not remember our childhood, when all we wanted to do was play and have fun? Why are we doing this to our kids? Why is it that when a kid tells everyone that he would not be able to cope with the pressure, nobody listens and tells him back that failure in exam is highly discouraged and not an option for him? Why have we become so insensitive?

I think it is high time that we all stopped for some time in our routine lives and seriously think about all of the above WHYs. Michael Gervais explains the need and importance of giving the children a better and a more fun loving environment for learning so that they are mentally stronger in dealing with the various challenges that may come their way. He clearly explains about the various pressures that kids today face and how one should deal with them in the attached video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCjcGjJaJSw

Peer Pressure Also Adds To The Woes Of These Kids

Steven Sussman, Ph.D, who is a child and adolescent psychologist and also the co-founder of the child and teen success centers in New York and New Jersey, explains in his video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-QU9kCwue4 how peer pressure is also a major contributory factor in causing depression among kids. This peer pressure exists both in schools as well as at homes. Constant comparisons between children can make the weaker child feel useless. This can sometimes prove to be really a contradiction of sorts. While on one hand it is important that the achievements of a kids are given due importance and he is applauded for the efforts, it is also important to bear in mind, that while doing so, you do not end up discouraging other weaker students.

It is about time that schools and parents understand that failure is not a fault of the child. I mean, it is not as if the child did it on purpose, right, or it’s not that the student has not taken any efforts. We all need to understand here that for most cases, the students learning cycle takes more time than what is given to him.

So, what do you think? Do you also think that harsh punishments are the best way to get the kid to perform well in his or her academics and school activities or do you agree with me when I say that providing the kids with a more lovable and fun learning environment will help both (us and the kid) in making a better future? Would love to know what your comments and suggestions on this matter are.

GETTING A GOOD GRADE IN PHYSICS

GETTING A GOOD GRADE IN PHYSICS
http://mondaymorning.nitrkl.ac.in/images/stories/28July2014/physics.jpg

The World of physics is spread over a broad spectrum, covering topics that range from beginning of the universe to shining of the sun, it focuses its subject matter primarily on explaining what “energy” is, the forms it can take, the components that make up matter and attempting to understand the relationship and interaction between the two. However, complicated and difficult it may sound, Physics in involved in our everyday lives, and thus, the field is dedicated to formulate, test and retest scientific principles that operate behind the understanding of natural universal phenomenon. This makes understanding of Physics elementary in understanding other branches of Sciences! An example of which can be seen here- http://study.com/academy/lesson/states-of-matter-solids-liquids-gases-plasma.html
Physics appears difficult because it uses more quantification than any other Science. The use of descriptive tools, mathematics, equations to predict and analyze the phenomenon that cover the smallest to largest aspects of fundamental ways of universal activities are challenging to students specially when getting a good grade is also an academic priority.
Let us help you in analyzing the important key hacks to make Physics simpler, interesting and clear!
And in the words of the famous Physicist Albert Einstein “the key component in knowledge from the past, application in the present and hoping for the future is a mind that never stops questioning”.
http://www.quotehd.com/imagequotes/topauthors/albert-einstein-physicist-if-the-facts-dont-fit-the-theory-change-the.jpg

Knowledge of the subject matter of Physics- Physics as we know covers the how and why of occurrences in Natural Science and its discoveries have had significant assistance in enriching the human life. The primary endeavor in unraveling the secret of having a grip in any subject is to understand what it covers and how it covers. Being informed about the expanding knowledge base and regular discoveries helps in creating awareness and interests in our mind about the length and breadth of the band of the subject and build the foundational ability for thorough understanding and reasoning. Equipping yourself with the knowledge of basic consonants, equations and their derivations is very important for performance in the subject (e.g. Force= Mass X Acceleration) etc. The textbooks cannot and do not cover everything, thus it becomes important to supplement knowledge of the subject through other mediums like recent researches, video links for basic concepts, informative images that update us and bring clarity in understanding.

Attention to the problem and concentrating on the solution- Most of the text material available these days offer explanation of the solution to a problem and then ask the student to solve a similar problem with referral to the original one. Paying attention to such methods of problem solving and regular practice creates a quick grip on the questions asked and gives an idea about what can be asked. There are however, unique problems which may not be explained; at this stage the student should direct his/her attention to “what is being asked” and “what possible explanations can be offered”. Filtered attention to a problem makes one efficient in reaching the solution. The final solution may not be absolutely accurate, but the steps followed to calculate it are also evaluated and the examiner gets an idea about student’s overall knowledge of the problem.

Importance of Mathematic Skills- the relationship between mathematics and physics is very strong. The thorough knowledge of mathematics is extremely important in physics. From classical mechanics to quantum theories to statistics, Physics as a quantitative science is largely dependent on mathematical calculations to explain its phenomenon. Knowledge of units, geometry, algebraic equations and calculus are some very important prerequisites. Solving complex mathematical problems develops a logical mindset to solve problems of physics. Mathematics serves as a concept plan to mechanize thinking using rules and operations to simplify relationships in physics. A number of Ph.D. Scholars in this field shared their area of research and role of Mathematics in Physics, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gT_Ski6YAY

Mathematical Physics and other sciences.png
Simplifying Calculations by maintaining focus- refining skills in estimating, approximating and analyzing the modeled assumptions to simplifying equations and finding answers is very essential. Mathematical concepts of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, equations, derivations, calculus, statistics, approximation etc. are very important in solving the problems of physics. The question is how can we simplify these and establish focus? The answer is simple- basic hang of concepts, attentiveness in classes, practice and revision, reviewing notes and observing references. The focus should be maintained on reducing lengthy problems into basic equations – identifying information asked- assigning specific variables to information- using correct units and measurement methods and focused calculations with rechecking keeping in mind the kind of solution sought. A step by step methodology is the key to successful solutions. There are a lot of videos available on web to make folk aware about the Physics in different interesting ways, you can check one here-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Xp_imnO6WE

http://www.free-online-calculator-use.com/image-files/fraction-to-percent-calculator.jpg
Recognizing what is really important- Usually the problems in physics are a complex blend of information, which forms a framework to presenting the problem. However, one should keep in mind the detailing while solving. It is extremely important to distill excessive information from specific requirements. For e.g. A question on a shot put at some angle will involve speed, time, angle, motion, air density, strength, object properties etc. but the calculations may only require one to calculate distance travelled by the object. So, excessive information from the question should be discarded.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-scwcRUkHM9A/VNieWaGvVHI/AAAAAAAAhGk/tsDuIbef4DE/s0-d/focus_by_pyr0_de1.png
Rechecking and observation- in any mathematical calculation, it makes sense to review in detail the calculations, methodology, units and variables that confirm the correct solution to the problem. Since the calculations in Physics are more complex and detailed, systematic revision is highly essential. Paying attention and double checking ensures clarity of thought invested in solving the problem and a good grade.
http://sd.keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk/i/keep-rechecking-and-always-improving-1.png
Basic Rules for Excellence- Apart from the knowledge, detailing, perfection in basic principles and focus, some basic rule of thumbs should be acknowledged like attending lectures regularly, seeking help of teachers at doubts, being systematic and organized, keeping updated, seeking practical explanation for topics, enjoying and observing physics in daily life and reading supplementary material.
http://www.columbia.k12.fl.us/columbiacity/images/a-.gif
When the principles surrounding little things in our daily lives to unraveling deepest universal secrets are understood with interest and combined with a quench for more knowledge it becomes a reservoir for new discoveries.
Let us know what simple hacks you have used or observed in your daily life that use Physics and make its principles fun to memorize.
